43rd Chess Olympiad 2018 starts today

  Georgia is organizing the 43rd Chess Olympiad. This large-scale event starts in Batumi today, September 23rd. Sixteen countries had participated in the first Chess Olympiad in 1924, but the 43rd Chess Olympiad is expecting the teams of women and men from 190 countries. The top-rated countries are:

  • 1 USA (2772)                                            6 Ukraine (2698)
  • 2 Russia (2764)                                       7 France (2688)
  • 3 China (2756)                                         8 Armenia (2688)
  • 4 Azerbaijan (2748)                                9 England (2688)
  • 5 India (2724)                                          10 Israel (2676)

 

 The Olympiad is organised by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) and comprising open and women’s tournaments, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess. Every country is represented on four boards with 4 best players from that country. The tournament will be 11 rounds Swiss system. Today is the opening ceremony, and tomorrow starts the first round. The USA will try to defend their title from the last Olympiad 2016. The proposed budget for men and women Olympiad exceeds 20 million USD.  In the women section, top-rated countries are:
